The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at Bard College immerses students in a comprehensive study of the medium and its place in contemporary art. Students will explore both traditional and digital practices, learning to harness the power of the photographic image as a means of artistic expression. The curriculum emphasizes technical skill development, concept-driven work, and the historical and theoretical contexts of photography. Through a combination of studio work, critiques, and theory courses, students are introduced to various genres, including portrait, landscape, and documentary photography.
Throughout the program, students will engage with a range of photographic technologies and methodologies. Workshops and one-on-one mentorships facilitate hands-on experience, enabling students to cultivate their unique voice and style. Classes are structured to foster collaborative learning environments where peer feedback plays a critical role in artistic development. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to exhibit their work and participate in critiques, enhancing their public presentation skills.
By studying photography at Bard College, students gain not only technical expertise but also critical thinking skills and an understanding of visual culture. In doing so, they prepare themselves for a dynamic and evolving field where creativity and innovation are paramount. The program encourages students to think beyond conventional boundaries, prompting them to challenge norms and push the limits of photography as an art form.
Applicants whose first language is not English are typically required to demonstrate proficiency through standardized tests. A minimum TOEFL score of around 80 or an IELTS score of 6.5 is often expected, but specific requirements may vary.
International students need to obtain an F-1 visa to study in the United States. Acceptance into the program will result in the issuance of an I-20 form, which is necessary for the visa application process. Additionally, students must comply with SEVIS registration.
